Mahabodhi Temple Complex at Bodh GayaThe Mahabodhi Temple Complex is located at the holy area of Bodh Gaya in the Indian state of Bihar.
Bodh Gaya is the most important of the main four holy pilgrimage sites in respect to the life of the Lord Buddha.
The other three are Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath. The town of Kushinagar is where Buddhists believe Gautama Buddha attained Parinirvana after his death.
Lumbini, meaning "the lovely" in Sanskrit, is the birthplace of Gautama Siddharta, the child's name of Buddha.
The deer park in the city of Sarnath is where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma
In 2002, Mahabodhi Temple became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Bodh Gaya is the famous place where Gautama Buddha obtained Enlightenment (pali: bodhi) under Bodhi Tree.
The first temple was built by Emperor Asoka in the 3rd century B.C., and the present temple dates from the 5th or 6th centuries. It is one of the earliest Buddhist temples built entirely in brick, still standing in India, from the late Gupta period.
