In a prologue, young Gilda Bessé, the daughter of a French aristocrat and an emotionally unstable American mother, reluctantly is told the life line on her palm doesn't extend past the age of thirty-four by a fortune teller. Fast forward to a rainy night in 1933, when she stumbles into the room of Guy Malyon, a working-class Irishman who is a first-year student on scholarship at Cambridge University. She has had a lover's quarrel with one of the dons, and rather than turn her out into the storm, Guy gallantly allows her to spend the night. Later, they become lovers, but the two are separated when Gilda's mother dies and she opts to leave England. Several years later, Guy sees her as an extra in a Hollywood film, and shortly after he coincidentally receives a letter from her inviting him to visit her in Paris, where she's working as a photographer.

In a time torn apart by hatred and violence, two lifelong lovers are forced to choose between passion and personal convictions, their fate intertwined with the painful history of a world at war. Sony Pictures Classics presents HEAD IN THE CLOUDS, written and directed by John Duigan ("Flirting," "Sirens") and starring Academy Award winner Charlize Theron, Stuart Townsend and Penelope Cruz. Irish born Guy (Townsend) is the son of a policeman, on scholarship at Cambridge University in 1933. On a rainy night, his door bursts open and beautiful Gilda (Theron) enters his life. The daughter of a French aristocrat raised by her American mother, Gilda is somewhat notorious for her affairs, and quiet Guy lets her spend the night, treating her with respect and humor. Later, at a party, they become lovers, but Guy can't believe it will last. The death of her mother prompts Gilda to leave England, and Guy is amused years later when he spots her as an extra in a Hollywood film.

Synopsis

캠브리지 대학의 모범생 가이(스튜어트 타운센드)의 기숙사에 어느 날 매혹적인 불청객 길다(샤를리즈 테론)가 황급히 숨어든다. 이 학교 교수인 그녀의 애인을 의식하며 조심스러워 하는 가이와 달리, 자유분방한 길다는 거칠 것이 없다. 자신과는 너무나 다른 상대에게 호기심을 느끼던 그들은 점차 서로에게 끌리게 되고, 결국 사랑의 밤을 보낸다. 그러나 채 시작되기도 전에 이들의 사랑은 시련에 부딪힌다. 어머니의 부음을 듣고 홀연히 영국을 떠나는 길다와 못 다한 사랑을 안타깝게 가슴에 묻는 가이.
