할리우드를 대표하는 섹시 배우 ‘주드 로’와 <다크나이트>에서 선 굵은 짙은 연기를 선보였던 연기파 배우 ‘마이클 케인’이 미스터리 반전 심리극 <추적>에서 만났다. 한 여자를 두고 서로를 시기하는 연기를 선보이는 ‘주드 로’와 ‘마이클 케인’은 이미 오래 전부터 특별하고 깊은 인연을 지녔었는데, <추적>을 통해 또 한번 그 특별한 인연을 자랑한다.
‘주드 로’를 명실공히 할리우드 최고의 섹시 배우의 자리에 오르게 한 영화 <나를 책임져, 알피>는 1966년 ‘마이클 케인’의 <알피>를 리메이크 한 작품으로, 2004년 ‘주드 로’가 업그레이드 된 바람둥이 ‘알피’를 연기하면서 ‘주드 로’와 ‘마이클 케인’의 인연은 시작되었다. 같은 작품의 같은 캐릭터를 연기했다는 특별한 인연 외에도 ‘주드 로’와 ‘마이클 케인’은 미스터리 반전 심리극 <추적>에서도 몇 십 년의 세월을 뛰어넘어 똑같은 캐릭터 연기를 선보이게 된다. 바로 ‘마이클 케인’이 1972년 <발자국>에서 ‘마일로 틴들’역을, ‘주드 로’가 리메이크 <추적>에서 ‘마일로 틴들’역을 맡은 것. ‘주드 로’가 두 번이나 ‘마이클 케인’이 연기했던 작품의 리메이크작에 출연했다는 것 자체만으로도 특별한 그들의 인연은 거기서 끝나지 않고, 영화 <추적>을 통해 환상의 연기 앙상블을 선보일 것으로 기대된다.

1972년 <발자국> vs 2008 <추적> 전격 비교!
<추적>은 1970년 영화가 아닌 연극으로 무대에 처음 올려졌다. 이후 1972년, ‘마이클 케인’, ‘로렌스 올리비에’ 주연의 <발자국>으로 리메이크 되어 스크린으로 옮겨졌다. 원작이 연극을 위해 탄생된 작품인 만큼 스크린으로 옮겨져 탄생된 <발자국>은 연극적인 색깔이 강하게 묻어나는 작품이다. 특히, 두 등장 인물로만 극의 흐름을 이끌어가야 했기 때문에 배우의 역할이 어느 영화보다 중요한 요소 중에 하나였는데, ‘마이클 케인’과 ‘로렌스 올리비에’는 이를 완벽하게 소화해내며, 완성도 높은 작품을 만들어냈다. 35년이 지난 후에 <발자국>은 캐네스 브래너 감독이 메가폰을 잡아 ‘주드 로’와 ‘마이클 케인’ 주연의 <추적>으로 리메이크 되었다. ‘마이클 케인’은 72년 <발자국>과 리메이크 된 <추적>에 동시에 출연해 전혀 다른 두 캐릭터를 연기하며, 품격 있는 연기력을 선보였다.

About the Movie
Sleuth is a 2007 film directed by Kenneth Branagh based on Harold Pinter's screenplay adaptation of the Tony Award-winning play Sleuth, by Anthony Shaffer and starring Jude Law as Milo Tindle and Michael Caine as Andrew Wyke. The film was a remake of another filmed version in which Caine had starred as Tindle opposite Laurence Olivier. The 2007 version was largely commercialised as a collaboration between Law, Branagh, Caine and Pinter, leading figures of British stage and screen. According to most accounts, this is a remake of the 1972 film, but Pinter's screenplay offers "a fresh take" on Shaffer's play and "a very different form" from the original film. In his review of the film's debut at the 2007 Venice Film Festival, Morris observes: "The reworking of the play is not just an adept transformation of theater to film... but also casts a revealing light on social history, reflecting the enormous changes in English society, language and morals in the nearly 40 years since the play first appeared on the London stage." Caine had starred as Tindle opposite Laurence Olivier's Wyke in the 1972 film Sleuth. In the 2007 film, Caine performs the role of Andrew Wyke, and Law performs Caine's original role of Tindle. This is the second film in which Law performs a role originated by Caine. (The first was the title role in Alfie).
