 N. Korean Leader Kim Jong-Il Looks Old, FrailNorth Korean leader Kim Jong-Il was seen reading documents at the 15th central commemoration ceremony for the deceased founder of North Korea "Kim Il-Sung" held at Pyongyang Gymnasium in the morning of July 8, 2009. Kim looked very weakened, having much less hair than before. Critics say that Kim shows a sign of suffering from a stroke. He is reportedly in process of passing the power to his third youngest son Kim Jong-Un.
Kim Jong-il was born on Feb. 16, 1941, Vyatskoye, Khabarovsk Krai, Soviet Union; official biographies state on Feb. 16, 1942, Baekdu Mountain, Korea under Japanese rule. He is the de facto leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. He is the Chairman of the National Defense Commission, Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, and General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (the ruling party since 1948). He succeeded his father Kim Il-sung, founder of North Korea, who died in 1994, and commands the fourth largest standing army in the world. North Korea officially refers to him as the "Dear Leader."
