Free Dental Care Available for Alien Workers
By Charles Park
Staff Reporter
Foreign workers are now able to get free dental care with the help of a group of philanthropic dentists.

The benevolent medical group, Dentists' Charitable Association(DCA), operates seven dental clinics to serve for alien laborers who cannot afford "expensive" medical costs.

Among the seven clinics are Jungwon Health Center in Sangdaewon-1dong Jungwon-gu in Seongnam city, Neachon Public Health Center in Naechon-myeon Pocheon-gun in Pocheon city, and Dongtan Public Health Center in Osan-ri Dongtan-myeon in Whaseong city in Kyonggi province.

The other four facilities are Gimje Public Health Center inside Oral Health Improvement Surgery in Shinpung-dong Gimje city, Dalseong-gun Social Welfare Center in Nongok-myeon Dalseong-gun in Daegu, Kumi Catholic Workers' Center in Wonpyeong-dong Kumi city, and Association for Foreign Workers' Center in Jeonpo-2dong Busanjin-gu in Busan.

"All the foreign laborers" are eligible for the free services which include partial removable denture, fixed partial denture(crown and bridge), complete denture(prosthetic treatment-making denture), according to DCA.

The service days and hours are different, depending upon the situations of each clinic and facility.
(See details in the box below)

Lim Ji-jun, who runs DCA, said recently that the foreign workers can get the free dental treatment regardless of the conditions of their teeth.

Lim said the free dental services actually started almost one year ago and runs until the end of September 2002. However, the service period could be expanded if more patrons and sponsors show up.

The prior reservation must be made with reachable address and phone number to Hee-sung Jeon(031-532-2592). She is in charge of administration for all the seven locations.

The date and time of the treatment will be informed afterward. Also needed is passport or "believer certificate" issued by church.

Lim recommends that he or she brings a Korean-speaking friend when going for the free dental treatment.

Lim revealed that DCA is financed by Chest Community of Korea(CCK), a government fund along with the first lady. The free dental services are carried out in the name of the Denture Health Improvement Project for Foreign Workers.

"We hope to relieve the alien workers of their pain. The are afraid of getting dental treatment due to the "expensive" costs they cannot afford with their salaries," Lim said, "Moreover, some alien workers are not medically covered by insurance from their companies."

He said "it's my duty to take care of alien workers who have no money for local medical treatment." "What we really need to do is continuing care and concern for the needy foreign patients, not merely one-time care," he added.

Lim said DCA is in dire need for donors and supporters for the poor patients from the foreign countries.

"If you want to support them, you can be a sponsor or supporter," Lim said emphatically.
