Moritzburg Festival Starts Open Air and with a Digital Premiere on Aug. 7, 2021
Moritzburg Festival starts open air and with a digital premiere on Aug. 7, 2021.
DRESDEN (July 29, 2021) — The Moritzburg Festival announces several innovations for its 29th season. Under the artistic direction of Jan Vogler, the chamber music festival’s program features 22 events with 29 soloists from Aug. 7 to 22, 2021. The audience can look forward to appearances by Louis Lortie (piano), Pablo Ferrández (cello), Albrecht Mayer (oboe), and a reunion with Mira Wang, Kai Vogler (violin) and Jan Vogler (cello). This year’s patron of the festival is Ricardo Martínez, ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain.

In cooperation with “So geht sächsisch.” the unique symbiosis of profound experiences of music and nature can be experienced worldwide for the very first time: All live concerts will be streamed via the international platform Dreamstage making them digitally accessible.

Another new feature is the open-air stage on the northern terrace of Moritzburg Castle, which now serves as the main venue of the festival. The summery music experience is made possible by a one-time grant as part of the “Neustart Kultur” program for the purchase of the stage roofs, podiums, and seating.

“A summer celebration of passion and emotions! We are all looking forward to the encounters with fellow artists and our wonderful audience,” says Jan Vogler, artistic director of the Moritzburg Festival.

One highlight of the festival will be the concert “Moritzburg for all” in the Dresden Kulturpalast on Aug. 21. For the very first time after a year of a pandemic-induced musical hiatus, the 40 participants of the Moritzburg Festival Academy will perform a symphonic program as the Moritzburg Festival Orchestra under the baton of Josep Caballé Domenech. As well as Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 2 in C Major Op. 61, the program features Beethoven’s Triple Concerto in C Major, Op. 56 with soloists Mishka Rushdie Momen (piano), Kevin Zhu (violin), and Jan Vogler (cello).

This year, the Moritzburg Festival Academy (director Mira Wang) unites young talents from 16 nations. During the two festival weeks, they will rehearse and master an extensive chamber music and orchestra repertoire, and introduce themselves to the audience in ever-changing ensembles, for example at the musical picnic at Proschwitz Castle (Aug. 15) and the Long Night of Chamber Music (Aug. 19). The Moritzburg Festival Orchestra will once again be part of the Young Euro Classic Festival in the Konzerthaus Berlin (Aug. 13).
