Berliner Philharmoniker Releases First Edition
of Music Education Format with Kirill Petrenko

Kirill Petrenko
Editor's Note: To mark the start of the Berlin summer holidays, the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation has released the first edition of the new music education format with Kirill Petrenko, Close-up, and the last family concert of the season, Magic Night, in the Digital Concert Hall and on the website.

To mark the start of the Berlin summer holidays, the Berliner Philharmoniker Foundation has released the first edition of the new music education format with Kirill Petrenko, Close-up, in the Digital Concert Hall and on the website.

Last season, chief conductor Kirill Petrenko was to present family concerts with the whole orchestra, but unfortunately they had to be cancelled due to the pandemic.

Instead, the first project of the new format Close-up, in which Kirill Petrenko explains Kurt Weill’s First Symphony together with principal horn player Stefan Dohr and percussionist Simon Rössler with the involvement of teenagers and young adults, has been realised as a film.

The format shows in a tangible way how different realities relate to, complement and influence each other. The new offering is intended as a further contribution by the Berliner Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko to providing fresh access to classical music in the digital world. Upcoming projects include Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet and Iolanta, and Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird.

The music of Kurt Weill also takes centre stage in the last family concert of the season, Magic Night: also as a film due to the pandemic, members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Karajan Academy perform Kurt Weill’s children’s pantomime Magic Night under the baton of Philharmoniker percussionist Simon Rössler.

In Nelly Danker’s production, the Magic Fairy, played by actress and soprano Ruth Rosenfeld, brings two children’s toys to life and causes turmoil. The children as well as the toys are played by the acrobats of the BERLINJOHN Family.

Magic Night is suitable for ages five and up and is now available in the Digital Concert Hall and on the website.
