Madame Xiang Xuequi, spouse of the current Belgium Ambassador to South Korea Peter Lescouhier, practiced the Chinese martial art of Tai Chi Chuan (п), serving as its master, local Korean daily Chosun Ilbo reported on June 4, 2021.

The mass circulation daily quoted its Paris correspondent for the story in which the Belgium ambassadorial spouse worked as a master or lecturer of the Chinese martial art at a Confucius Institute in Lithuania where her husband served as the ambassador between 2012 and 2015.

Madame Xiang Xuequi was involved in the dispute in Seoul in early April as she hit the face of the Korean employees of a clothing shop in Hannam-dong area of Seoul where the Belgium Embassy is located.

She attacked the Korean ladies as she was suspected as a thief by the employees.

The Confucius Institute was set up by the Chinese government to propagate its language and culture. One of its curriculum Tai Chi Chuan (п) is taught for self-defence and health.

There are a total of 541 academies of Confucius Institute around the world including 22 in South Korea.

"It explains very now how the Belgium envoy's Chinese wife could have easily attacked the two Korean employees," said one journalist. "She was the master of the Chinese martial art"

Belgium Embassy in Seoul Avoids All Contact As Its Envoy's Chinese Wife Hits

Meanwhile the Belgium Embassy in Seoul refused all contacts with the local callers and visitors after the envoy's Chinese wife got involved in an incident in which she hit some local Korean employees of a clothing shop.

A local journalist was hung up on consecutively by the Korean and Belgium receptionists of the Belgium Embassy on April 22, 2021.

"They were not only grossly rude but also arrogant," the local journalist was quoted as saying. "It was totally ununderstandable that the embassy staff were so careless and rude to the inquiry of the incident.

According to local police and media, Madame Xiang Xuequi, the wife of Belgium Ambassador to South Korea Peter Lescouhier, hit two employees of a clothing shop on the slaps several times on April 9, 2021.

The physical assault took place in a clothing shop in the Hannam-dong area of Seoul on the day when the envoy's wife was suspected as a thief by the employees.

The local media said the violence took place as the ambassador's spouse got back into the shop after she left it. The employee suspected that she was wearing their clothes when she left their shop.

The diplomat's wife was wearing the same clothes as the one displayed in the shop.

But, after they found out the clothe she was wearing was not from their shop, they allegedly apologized to her.

However, infuriated the ambassador's wife went back to the shop, hitting the employees' faces and the back of the heads.

The ambassador's spouse stayed in the shop for one hour before she left it.

After the incident, the Yongsan Police Station tried to summon her, but she refused to be investigated fo the time being. Later she went to the police station for investigation.

The ambassador's wife was reportedly hospitalized at an unidentified hospital after complaining about symptoms of cerebral stroke.

After the incident was reported by the local news media, an increasing number of local Korean people are criticizing the violence of Madame Xiang Xuequi on the hapless local Koreans.

Meanwhile, on April 22, 2021 the Belgium Embassy, issued the statement through he public Facebook of the embassy, making an official apology to the victims and to the general public.

Yet, complaints and criticism of the ambassador's wife are snowballing on the internet.

Two days earlier on April 20, 2021 the South Korean Foreign Ministry summoned the deputy head of the mission Patrick Englebert from the Belgium Embassy, urging him to cooperate with the investigation. The Korean government urged the embassy to make an official apology.

According to the police, Madame Xiang Xuequi was also suspected of hitting others before this incident.

The victims allegedly said that the ambassador's wife had not apologized to them and refused to attend the police investigation.

According to the public Facebook of the embassy, angry local Koreans say that Madame Xiang Xuequi was born and grew up in China, arguing that she was violent on the Koreans just because she was Chinese.

Ambassador Peter Lescouhier studied at Nanjing University in China in 1980s, serving at the Belgium Embassy in Beijing from 1991 to 1997.

It was in 2018 that he and his wife arrived in Seoul as an ambassadorial couple. In December of 2020 they had their residence in the UN Village in Hannam-dong in Yongsangu, Seoul.
