Cherry Blossoms Open 2 Weeks Earlier
Cherry Blossom Festivals Takes Place Across Nation

As of March 31, 2014 cherry blossoms are in full bloom in and around Seoul as well as in southern and middle parts of the Korean Peninsula. Other spring flowers — the azaleas, forsythia, royal azaleas are also in full bloom around the country.

Korean Meteorological Administration (KMA) said on the day that the cherry blossoms opened 13 days earlier compared with previous years. It said the blooming of the cherry blossoms the earliest since it started weather service in 1922.

On March 30 (Sunday), 2014 a number of people visited Yoonjoongro street of Yoido where South Korean National Assembly building is located to inhale the scent of the cherry blossom. On this street and its vicinities some 1,500 cherry blossom trees are planted.

Weather reports predicts that the cherry blossoms will peak between April 4 and April 6 this year in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province areas.

The cherry blossoms began to open on Jeju Island on Feb. 25, 2014. It took only three days the blossoms reached all the way to Seoul area. It opened on Feb. 25 in Busan, on Feb. 27 in Daegu and Pohang areas, and on Feb. 28 in Gwangju, Jeonju, Daejeon areas.

The early opening of the cherry blossoms was ascribable to the relatively higher temperature in months of February and March this year, according to KAM.

Around this time of the year a number of cherry blossom festivals are taking place all across the country.

In Seoul and its surrounding areas “Yeouido Spring Flower Festival” is the most famous one. It is held in the street of Yeouiseo-ro on Yoido Island where South Korean National Assembly building is located.

Between 1,400 and 1,600 cherry blossom trees are planted on the street along the Han River in Seoul.

(Yunjung-no) in mid-April when the azaleas, forsythia, royal azaleas, and other spring flowers are in full bloom. The celebration is famous for its 1,400~1,600 Korean Cherry trees. At night, the cherry blossoms are illuminated by colorful lights and other side street performances and art exhibitions are being held as well.

Scores of other cherry blossom festivals taking place across the nation include “Jinhae Gunhangje Festival,” “Jeju Cherry Blossom Festival,” “Hwagae Cherry Blossoms Festival,” and “Cheongpunghoban Cherry Blossom Festival.”

“Jinhae Gunhangje Festival” takes place in Juwon Rotary, Jinhae-gu, Changwon-si, South Gyeongsang Province on April 1-10, 2014). Some 2 million people from all over Korea visit the festival every year.

“Jeju Cherry Blossom Festival” held at Jeju Sports Complex area, Jeju-si, Jeju Island on April 4-6, 2014. Other flowers including orchids greets the visitors in a sound of music in the festival.

Hwagae Market in South Gyeongsang Province’s Hadong County also greets tourists from across the nation with its own “Hwagae Cherry Blossoms Festival” on April 5-6, 2014. The traditional open-air market located in the border between South Jeolla Province and South Geyongsang Province where a beautiful Seomjin River runs.

“Cheongpunghoban Cherry Blossom Festival” takes place along the long road stretching 13 kilometers around the pristine Cheongpungho Lake in Cheongpung-myeon in North Chungcheong Province’s Jecheon City. Thousands of cherry trees greet visitors every year. This year the festival is planned in mid-April.
