Georgia Marks Independence Day in Seoul
Amb. Nikoloz Apkhazava Hosts Reception at Lotte Hotel

Georgian Ambassador to South Korea Nikoloz Apkhazava hosted a reception at Lotte Hotel in Seoul on May 31 (Friday) on the occasion of its “Independence Day.”

The dinner reception attracted a number of both local and international guests including scores of top foreign envoys and their spouses serving in Seoul.

Georgia gained its independence in 1991 following the collapse of the former Soviet Union.

Georgia formed the diplomatic relations with South Korea on Dec. 14, 1992.

In 1994 South Korea sent five of its military officers to Georgia as part of UN peace-keeping operation (PKO) activities. As of April of 1999 three South Korean officers were operating in Georgia as the observers of UN PKO.

Currently well over 250 South Koreans are residing in Georgia.

Georgia imports from South Korea such items as medical equipment, sugar, confectionary, and plastic products.

The bilateral trade has been on the steady increase since the establishment of the diplomatic ties.

The Georgian Embassy was established in Seoul’s Intaewon-dong area in August of 2011.

Ambassador Apkhazava served in Tokyo, Japan as the minister-counsellor at the Embassy of Georgia before he came to Seoul as an ambassador. He worked there from 2008 till 2011.

Prior to that Apkhazava served an ambassador at large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia in Tbilisi.

Ambassador Apkhazava majored in international law at Yokohama National University, earning his law degree (LL.D.).

He also studied law at University of Ferrara in Italy and at Tbilisi State University in Georgia.

He was born in the city of Zugdidi, Georgia on July 6, 1971.

Ambassador Apkhazava is one of the most active top foreign envoys in Seoul in his ambassadorial duty.
