Mission Hills Hosts Career-Shaping Scholarship Invitational
Mission Hills hosts career-shaping scholarship invitational.

Dongguan, China (June 1, 2016) — Chinese youngsters seeking to carve themselves a career in the Royal and Ancient game have been boosted with the staging of the fourth edition of the Mission Hills-St Andrews Scholarship Invitational on May 31, 2016.

Proceeds from the fund-raising event, presented by DAMI this year, will be used to send talented Chinese golfers to the world famous University of St Andrews, located at the ancestral home of golf in Scotland.

Underlining Mission Hills’ commitment to grow the game, the event was inaugurated in 2013 when St Andrews University was celebrating its 600th anniversary.

Mission Hills will draw up a shortlist of candidates before final selection is made in collaboration with the University of St Andrews, Scotland’s oldest university. The fortunate students will be considered for acceptance into the University of St Andrews’ Saints Golf Programme for the duration of the overseas study term.

Tenniel Chu, Vice Chairman of Mission Hills Group, said: “Both Mission Hills and the University of St Andrews share a commitment to grow golf in China by providing talented young Chinese players access to a world-class university to study and improve their game.”

“A sustainable long-term future for golf in China depends on growing the game at the grass-roots level. This programme is a significant investment in that future.”

Played over the Olazabal Course at Mission Hills Dongguan, the tournament attracted a field of 130 players and featured teams.

Among the players were a host of celebrities including veteran Hong Kong-based actor and film producer Simon Yam Tat-wah, fellow-actors Wang Zhiwen and Michael Wong and Taiwan-born Singaporean television actress and host Vivian Lai Yi-ling.

Celebrity Division Team Winner went to the quartet of Cindy LEE Si-Nga, Danny Lau, Gilbert Lam and Lu Weifeng. The Guest Division Team Winner are Lin Feng, Hou Na and Wang Chang.

Tenniel Chu said: “Through our on-going collaboration with the University of St Andrews we’re able to continue to enhance junior golf development and provide the best international platform possible for the development of young players in China.

“Mission Hills has a proud record of promoting junior golf, with a full programme of tournaments supported by such legends as Sir Nick Faldo, Jack Nicklaus and Annika Sörenstam. It is in this spirit that we host this event as another way of assisting China’s young players.”

Speaking on behalf of the University of St Andrews, Benjamin Stuart said: “Through the support of Tenniel Chu and Mission Hills China we are delighted to be launching the "Tenniel Chu Scholarship Fund" with funds from the proceeds of the annual Mission Hills St Andrews golf tournament, which will allow talented golfers to study in St Andrews and join our Saints Golf team.

“We look forward to a long and productive association with Mission Hills China, building on our strong student and alumni base in China, Hong Kong, and throughout the South East Asia.”

The tournament is part of a programme of activities and exchanges between Mission Hills and the University of St Andrews.
